Products that communicate intelligently

The majority of products in the current EC product portfolio of ventilation technology, drive motors and gas blowers are equipped with integrated digital bus interfaces. If the customer prefers, the products can also be networked wirelessly. The centerpiece of these EC products is a circuit board that controls the integrated motor system. The Industry 4.0-capable products are also equipped with a processor that can send data as well as receive it, allowing the products to be networked digitally. They can communicate with one other and with higher-level systems, such as building automation systems. In normal operation, the processor receives the requested operating point and sends back the current operating data. If a fan has a fault, it reports this to the building control system together with diagnostic information and, if necessary, goes into emergency mode. This enables the building control system to implement reliable, energy-efficient air conditioning.

Since 2009, ebm-papst has been networking production processes with SAP ME (Manufacturing Execution). In communication between the production machines and the higher-level SAP ME, data are retrieved and production steps are initiated in an independent and continuous request-response process using a unique ID for the prospective product. Production is then managed and monitored in a central system throughout the entire process so that any errors in production can be identified and rectified immediately. All production steps can be tracked since the data are collected and stored centrally. With the digitalization of production, processes are being optimized, controlled and designed more transparently. This includes easy-to-operate user interfaces, nearly paperless production, support for lean processes, following and verifying the process sequence, ensuring the use of correct and defect-free materials, traceability and recording process data. As a member of the Customer Council, ebm-papst works closely with SAP to further optimize the application.
